2012/13 Storybook and Acting Competition for Kindergarten Kids

To encourage children to form a good habit of saving and develop proper attitudes on money management, the MPFA has been organizing different parenting programmes for younger children. For academic year 2012/13, the MPFA continued to have the Education Bureau as the supporting organization for a parenting programme for kindergarten kids. The Programme comprised the following four components:

1.      A storybook and a teaching kit
Children learn four key concepts on money management – working, saving, spending and donating, through an interesting story complemented by a series of parenting activities.  MPF messages for parents and teachers were also incorporated in the storybook.  In addition, a teaching kit was developed to facilitate teachers’ in-class teaching. The storybooks were distributed to more than 100,000 kids of over 500 kindergartens, which accounted for 70% of the local kindergartens in Hong Kong. The kids could also share the money management messages with their family members through reading the storybook together.

Children can learn proper money management concepts through an interesting story, parenting games and finger puppets enclosed in the story book.

2.      Acting competition
Moreover, a school-based acting competition, targeting all kindergarten kids in Hong Kong, was organized to help them reinforce their knowledge on money management and develop saving habit through their participation in role playing. A large number of competition entries were received in October 2012 and ten outstanding finalists were selected to join the finale.

3.      Acting workshops
Workshops hosted by a professional drama education studio were organized for the ten finalist kindergartens of the Competition in November and December 2012. Kindergarten kids acquired acting skills and money management concepts through interactive games. The instructors also shared with teachers the training technique to further equip the kids for the finale of the Competition.

4.      Finale cum prize presentation
Kindergarten kids, their parents and teachers from the finalist kindergartens were invited to participate in the finale held on 2 February 2013 at the Jockey Club Auditorium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Officiating guests at the finale were:

●  Ms. Cynthia HUI, Executive Director (Supervision Division), MPFA;
