Any mandatory contributions paid for and in respect of an employee are fully and immediately vested in the employee once they are paid to the MPF trustee. Any investment return derived from the investment of the mandatory contributions is also fully and immediately vested in the employee.

Accumulated contributions and investment returns are collectively known as "accrued benefits".

If an employee is entitled to be paid severance payments or long service payments under the Employment Ordinance (Chapter 57, Laws of Hong Kong) by his/her employer, the portion of the accrued benefits derived from the employer’s contributions held in the MPF scheme can be used to offset such payments.
