MPFA welcomes issuance of Green Bonds and Infrastructure Bonds with priority investment opportunities for MPF funds
The HKSAR Government announced yesterday (4 June) the issuance of approximately HK$27 billion green bonds and infrastructure bonds under the Government Sustainable Bond Programme and the Infrastructure Bond Programme.
As highlighted in the 2023-24 Budget, the Government will earmark a certain proportion of issuances of Government green bonds and infrastructure bonds for priority investment by MPF funds. The MPFA welcomes this arrangement which helps enhance MPF investment diversification and facilitates investment by MPF funds in green and infrastructure bonds, thereby enabling MPF scheme members to benefit from more investment opportunities arising from the development of the local green and infrastructure bond markets. The arrangement, which is well-received by the MPF industry, will provide additional investment options for MPF funds and meet aspirations for more access to assets with stable returns.
The MPFA will continue to review and expand the scope of MPF permissible investment to facilitate MPF funds in investing in more diversified asset classes while balancing returns and risks, with a view to providing scheme members with greater risk diversification and better potential returns of their MPF investments, hence strengthening their retirement reserves.
