MPFA blog - eMPF enhances security measures
MPFA Chairman Mrs Ayesha Macpherson Lau published her blog post today (25 January), highlighting the decision to suspend the use of electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) for eMPF Platform (eMPF) registration to further improve security.
She pointed out that since the launch of eMPF, about 80% of MPF scheme members registered with eMPF did it through iAM Smart, while the remaining completed online identity verification and registered with eMPF via eKYC.
The blog post referred to a recent incident in which perpetrators used high-quality forged smart identity cards to impersonate scheme members to register with eMPF through eKYC. There was no leakage of personal data from eMPF in this incident. However, after thorough consideration, the eMPF project team decided to suspend the use of eKYC for eMPF registration to further enhance security. Meanwhile, iAM Smart introduced the latest enhanced authentication measures recently, and therefore, all eMPF registrations are now conducted through the more secure iAM Smart to enhance security and better safeguard users’ interests.
Mrs Lau acknowledged that some users may temporarily be unable to register with eMPF through iAM Smart due to various circumstances. To assist these users, starting on 2 February, individual users who need assistance when using iAM Smart for eMPF registration can visit any eMPF Service Centre (addresses available here) with their Hong Kong smart identity cards. Centre staff will help them complete eMPF registration in the self-service kiosks at the centre.
In addition, eMPF has enhanced the security requirements for MPF withdrawals to further safeguard the interests of scheme members. The improved arrangements are as follows:
- For accounts previously registered via eKYC, after submitting an MPF withdrawal application, the applicant will receive a notification from eMPF requesting additional identity verification via iAM Smart within a specified timeframe.
- The MPF withdrawal application will not be processed if the applicant does not complete the additional identity verification via iAM Smart within the timeframe.
- Applicants in need of assistance are welcome to visit an eMPF Service Centre in person for identity verification.
Mrs Lau encouraged employees who have not yet registered with eMPF to do so through iAM Smart as soon as possible. Those who have already completed registration should keep their login credentials, such as usernames and passwords, secure and change their passwords regularly, so as to improve security to protect the safety of their accounts.
