2026 Global Forum on Private Pensions Set for Hong Kong this December
MPFA was successful in its bid to host the 2026 Global Forum on Private Pensions (Global Forum), jointly organized with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors (IOPS). This marks the second time that Hong Kong will host this annual flagship event for the global pension sector, after hosting it in 2016.
Themed “Empowering Pension Systems Through Good Design and Innovation”, the two-day Global Forum will be held on 8 and 9 December 2026, focusing on how global pension systems can be empowered through good design and innovation. Pension regulators from over 80 OECD/IOPS member jurisdictions and leading experts from relevant research institutes will be invited. Together with representatives from other international organizations and local guests, the Global Forum is expected to bring together 1 000 participants.
The Global Forum will kick off with opening addresses by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mr John Lee and President of IOPS Mrs Astrid Ludin. Financial Secretary Mr Paul Chan will deliver the keynote address at the Gala Dinner.
MPFA Chairman Mrs Ayesha Macpherson Lau said that it was a great honour for the Global Forum to return to Hong Kong after a decade. She said: “It is of profound significance that the Global Forum on Private Pensions for 2026 will be held in Hong Kong. It affirms Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre and highlights the remarkable progress of the MPF System over the past 25 years, establishing it as one of the world’s leading privately managed retirement savings systems.”
Representatives of regulatory bodies and experts from around the world will share their insights on cutting-edge topics related to private pensions during various sessions at the Global Forum, covering digitalization in pension systems and the use of artificial intelligence (AI), the adoption of life-cycle investment strategies, the promotion of voluntary contributions, the contribution of capital markets to retirement protection, and supervisory practices.

In conjunction with the Global Forum, the IOPS will hold its 2026 Annual General Meeting and Committee Meetings in Hong Kong on 7 and 8 December. As another major event highlighting Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre, these meetings will enable regulatory representatives from IOPS member jurisdictions to review the organization’s work programme and facilitate exchanges on the latest developments in global pension systems.
As a pioneer in centralized digital platforms covering the full range of administration functions for private pensions, eMPFTM Platform (eMPF) has received widespread recognition in the international arena. Riding on the positive feedback on previous sharings at OECD and IOPS meetings, MPFA will hold a dedicated workshop on eMPF on 10 December. MPFA and eMPF teams will introduce the design principles, development journey, key features and operations of eMPF to pension regulators from around the world, enabling participants to gain deeper insights into the implementation experience of eMPF. The workshop will also outline MPFA’s regulatory initiatives in response to the evolving MPF ecosystem brought about by eMPF.
IOPS, the international standard-setting body for pension supervision, with participation from more than 80 jurisdictions across the globe, was founded with the objective of improving the quality and effectiveness of private pension systems globally. Pension providers in IOPS member jurisdictions have assets under management amounting to HK$500 trillion.
