EOC and MPFA jointly promote equal opportunities and financial well-being for people of diverse races
The following is jointly issued by EOC and MPFA
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) co-organised the “Digital Awareness Day on Equal Opportunities and Financial Well-being for People of Different Races” last Saturday (25 July) at the Kowloon Masjid and Islamic Centre. The event brought together people from diverse racial backgrounds to promote digital inclusion, enhance understanding of equal opportunities and strengthen financial well-being through a series of interactive booths and educational activities.
The event marked an important step in helping to bridge the digital literacy gap among communities of different races in Hong Kong, enabling them to access public services and manage their finances safely and confidently.
Speaking at the event, EOC Chairperson Ms Linda Lam Mei-sau said: “This Digital Awareness Day reflects a shared commitment to tackling an ongoing concern, the digital divide that continues to affect many within our ethnic communities. Earlier this year, the EOC released a study on improving the social well-being of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong by addressing this divide. The findings highlight that barriers such as language limitations and unfamiliarity with digital systems can hinder some individuals from fully participating in society. At the EOC, we regard this not simply as a technological gap, but as an equality issue that calls for sustained attention and concerted action.”
MPFA Chairman Mrs Ayesha Macpherson Lau said in her address, “As the regulator of the MPF System, we are committed to making the MPF System better, more user-friendly, transparent and accessible, so that all employees can take charge of their own MPF with ease. With the introduction of the eMPFTM Platform (eMPF), employers and employees can manage their MPF on this one-stop online platform anytime, anywhere. Resonating with the theme of this event, we want everyone, regardless of background, to feel confident using digital tools and manage their finances in a positive, responsible and safe manner, thereby creating more equal opportunities for all.”
The co-organisers, the EOC and MPFA, joined hands with participating organisations, including the Digital Policy Office’s iAM Smart Team, the eMPF’s outreach team, the Hong Kong Police Force’s Anti-Deception Coordination Centre and the Investor and Financial Education Council, to provide dedicated support at the event. Through interactive booths, supported by on-site interpretation services for participants with diverse language needs, they offered practical guidance on anti-discrimination ordinances, eMPF registration, iAM Smart registration, scam prevention and financial management.
Building on this momentum, the EOC and MPFA hope to encourage more organisations to promote digital inclusion, so that the values of equality and respect can take deeper root in Hong Kong’s public services and financial wellness sectors.
