MPFA organizes outreach activity to encourage Self-employed Persons to open MPF accounts

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) organized an outreach activity to encourage Self-employed Persons (SEPs) to join Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme and to make regular MPF contributions for early preparation for their retirement.

The MPFA staged an advertisement campaign on 200 taxis to promote the MPF to employees in different industries, and to draw the attention of SEPs to their MPF rights. In addition to encouraging SEPs who have yet to enrol in an MPF scheme to open an MPF account as soon as possible, it reminds SEPs who have already had an MPF account to actively manage their MPF.

As the majority of taxi drivers in Hong Kong are self-employed, the MPFA Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and Executive Director, Cheng Yan-chee, went to Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai to conduct an outreach activity today (24 January), together with the Chairman of the Motor Transport Workers General Union (MTWGU), Lewis Chan Siu-wah, the Director and Deputy Director of the MTWGU’s Taxi Driver Branch, Harry Ho Chi-keung and Low Shih-cheng respectively, as well as representatives of MPF trustees. They distributed MPF promotional leaflets and souvenirs to taxi drivers to help deepen their understanding of the MPF. The trustees also helped the taxi drivers open MPF SEP accounts on-site.

"Although SEPs enjoy certain degree of autonomy and flexibility at work, they receive no benefit nor MPF contributions provided by employers. Hence, they must prepare well for their retirement life in advance," Mr Cheng said. "The slogan of today’s outreach activity is ‘Open an MPF SEP account now and save for the future!’, we hope to remind SEPs through a series of activities. They include placing advertisement on taxis, producing short videos targeting primarily slashies for broadcast on social media and other channels. issuing a brand new flyer, arranging outreach activities and talks as well as calling on intermediaries to remind their clients with an SEP status for account enrolment. We wish to spread the message that opening an MPF SEP account in fact is very easy."

According to the MPFA, as at the end of December 2018, over 200,000 SEPs were registered in an MPF scheme, representing an enrolment rate of 70%. Mr Cheng stressed that the MPFA will keep using different channels to actively disseminate MPF messages to SEPs and remind them of the importance of joining an MPF scheme to help them better prepare for their retirement life.

The MPFA has published a number of leaflets, such as "Are You a Self-employed Person?" and "Guide on MPF Rights and Obligations for Self-employed Persons", for SEPs. For more details, please visit the designated MPFA web page.
